Testing the new Lensbaby Omni

2019-09-15

I've been eagerly following Lensbaby's announcements about their new Omni filter system which adds a lot of usablitiy and flexibility when it comes to prisming in photography. Primsing basically allows for some interesting and artistic looks while using a prism for light refrections / reflections and / or distortions.

The Omni Filter systems comes with 2 different glasses and a rainbow film, the system can be extended with an additional 3 glasses - a triangle prism, a crystal spear and a scalloped window. Each of the glasses adds a unique kind of effect to the image by altering or enhancing the given lighting. This allows a lot of variety without sacrificing the usability because the magnetic system works wonders and is a prime example for easy of use!

Using the Omni filter system changes the workflow quite a lot, especially when using 4 glasses at once. So far I've been using the Omni filter system with the Sony 85mm f1.8 prime lens and a Sony α 7II which allows me to hold the camera with one hand and focusing the image while rotating and positioning the glasses with the other.

Considering the joy I have when using the Trio-28 "in-between optics" the Omni system comes with a lot more flexibility and possible results as I have more control about the outcome and the look/effect. I'm most likely going to add a new Lensbaby Omni gallery once I got a good look and feel about what I'm trying to achieve!
